When our Founding Fathers created the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution, they never imagined a world where a gunman would randomly kill children in school, or people at the mall or cinema. After the Newtown school massacre of December 14, 2012, it is clearer than ever that our current gun control laws are inadequate. It is too easy for anyone to obtain assault weapons. Guns are falling into the hands of unstable people who can use them at will. We are not interested in persecuting the responsible gun owner who takes firearm safety classes, keeps all guns securely locked away, and only uses guns for lawful purposes. However, when innocent people are dying at the hands of madmen, this has to take precedence over 2nd Amendment rights. President Obama, Speaker Boehner, and the NRA's Director Wayne LaPierre need to open meaningful dialogue and push for gun law reform, as well as a complete ban on private ownership of assault weapons. We cannot idly stand by and wait for another incident like Columbine, Virginia Tech, and now Sandy Hook. We need to speak up as citizens and let our leaders know that we will no longer tolerate gun crimes of this nature.
