This abstinence education program contains little or no information about puberty, anatomy, sexually transmitted diseases, or sexual behavior, nor does it include information about the health benefits of contraception or condoms. It relies on inaccurate, fear-based classroom exercises, promotes heterosexual marriage as the only happy and healthy life path, harps on the potential harm of premarital relationships, promotes hoary gender roles and stereotypes and entirely ignores the existence of LGBT people. The evidence of the program’s effectiveness is highly questionable. A report ordered by Congress concluded that Heritage Keepers “had little or no impact on sexual abstinence or activity.”
Get rid of the Heritage Keepers Abstinence Education program
Kids deserve the straight facts about sex and contraception, not lies disguised as truth. The HKAE is designed to scare students into signing abstinence-until-marriage pledges which studies have proven are ineffective at preventing teens from having sex. Students need a balanced and matter-of-fact view which includes the reality of gay, bisexual, lesbian, and transgender people and people who choose not to marry. Don't send sex education back to the Dark Ages! Drop this program and replace it with one that educates, not indoctrinates.
