Don't Listen to Discriminatory Anti-Transgender Attacks!

Our planet is a cruel place for transgender people. In adolescence, a third of transgender youth attempt suicide and three-quarters report harassment at school. In adulthood, transgender people are several times more likely than cisgender (non-transgender) people to be victims of violent crime, and every November the Transgender Day of Remembrance mourns the loss of 40-50 trans people murdered for their gender identity—and those are only the documented cases.
Recently the LGBTQ activist site The Bilerico Project reported on an attempt by two radical feminists to submit a statement to the UN saying that gender-equality bills undermine women's rights since they allow protections for transgender people, particularly transgender women, whom they would like to see excluded in the name of "protecting" cisgender women. (source: http://www.bilerico.com/2011/08/less_than_woman_less_than_human.php) Trans woman correspondent Mercedes Allen decries the ridiculousness of these radical feminists who try to assign an arbitrary definition to the word "woman" that does not even fit all cisgender women, and for prioritizing discriminatory attitudes over the very real legal and physical threats that transgender people face.
We cannot let reactionary ideas stand in the way of human rights. Tell the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women to refuse to support any cause that blatantly demeans transgender people!
