The refugee crisis affects thousands of people, including many in Prince George’s County and on the University of Maryland campus. We live and study among hundreds of people who either are refugees or have ties to them. U.S. citizens have a moral duty to help, and at a time of growing hostility toward refugees, it is crucial that the University of Maryland embraces them with open arms. Joining Every Campus a Refuge (ECAR), an organization with the goal to have every college campus host one refugee family, is our best opportunity. A university decision to join ECAR would send a strong message and carry an unmatched educational opportunity by welcoming the “real world” into our proverbial “bubble.”
