Declan Brown started this petition to President Lesley Hallick and

We need to have an in-person graduation. It appears as though decisions are being made like we are still in last summer/fall, with rising and spiking numbers trending in the wrong direction. But that is not where we are at right now. Deeming some sort of an in-person graduation as “impossible” is ridiculous. A virtual graduation cannot come even close to having a real graduation, and it is definitely not the Pacific University standard. In 2020 we watched some of our closest friends have their graduation ripped from them because of things out of their control. But we have more knowledge now and we won’t stand for that again. We know that college is more than just the day of graduation, but it is a very important day and something that we have worked very hard the last 4 years to get to.

From December to February, the 7-day average for Covid cases is down ~85.2% in Washington County, and down ~78.8% in Oregon statewide. In known cases, the numbers are down ~87.4% in Washington County, and down ~85.2% in Oregon statewide. This is a huge and great change, and it keeps getting better! Plus, with how many people are being vaccinated every day, and President Biden saying that we should have enough vaccinations for every adult in the country by May, if Covid numbers continue to trend in the way that they are then by graduation, which is in mid-May, Covid should be a non-factor.

We talk about wanting to get back to normal, but we will never be able to get back to normal if we don’t start doing normal things. We have been told to “stay strong” and “it’s only for a little bit longer” for a year straight. We have had our capstones derailed, athletics cancelled, and have not been able to have normal classes. We have done everything that has been asked of us and still things do not go in our favor. While we appreciate the hard work done to help us finish our education, online classes have not been acceptable as compared to real in-person classes.

If any student or family member feels uncomfortable attending, then there will be proper accommodations made and they will be able to have graduation from the safety of their own home. But the rest of the students and their families should be allowed to attend. We do not believe that all options are being explored and implemented within the standards that Pacific promises us. We have been let down many times over this last year and have not received what was expected and paid for. Graduation should not have the same lower bar. We are prematurely cancelling a very important day.

Please sign this petition and help support us so the correct people will make the proper decision and fight for us in sending us off into life after college. This is something worth fighting for, especially with all we have lost. Be a leader. Thank you!
