The Duquesne University Provost, David J. Dausey, has made the decision to cut the Modern Language Proficiency Requirement for students graduating from McAnulty College of Liberal Arts. At first, the modern languages department was tasked with writing proposals to the Dean of Liberal Arts, Kristine L. Blair, to shorten the foreign language proficiency requirement. Once the proposal to change the requirement to the 201 proficiency level was approved by Blair, she then sent it to the Provost, Dausey, who decided they were going to cut the requirement entirely. This means that starting in the Spring semester of 2022, anyone entering the liberal arts school at Duquesne will no longer have to take a language to graduate from the liberal arts school. This decision is only going to cause a ripple effect. Not as many students will then be taking those classes, so the students who do want to take them risk having their classes be canceled because they might not fill up. Meaning, classes will be canceled, students won’t be able to take language classes, and eventually, the modern languages department will fizzle out. No upper level classes will be able to be offered and certain languages could cease to exist at Duquesne. We are fighting to prove that languages are a valuable asset to a University Education and to save the foreign language department by keeping the foreign language proficiency requirement, which is a defining feature of a Duquesne University Liberal Arts Degree.
