Having the younger generations learn about the actual history of America is incredibly important. History in grade schools are completely white-washed and that needs to change. Children deserve to know the truth about America. The good and the bad.

1) There are many things that are sugar-coated or white-washed in our history books. For some reason when it comes to other cultures or races (other than American) we have no problem with laying it all out on the table. Many things that we learned about ingenious cultures and slavery are skimmed over. They don’t tell us everything that happened during those times. One of the main things that they never revealed was that there were many instances of revolts from the oppressed. They went after the oppressors and stood their ground. America doesn’t want people to think that minorities can stand up for themselves and demand change.

2) I remember when I was in grade school and I loved to learn about history. However, when I grew up and began to do my own research I realized that most (if not all) of American history is fabricated in some way, shape or form. History teachers do not teach children minority history the way it should be taught. They white-wash it to make us think that only white people are capable of anything successful. If I was able to watch 9/11 happen on the TV while in school where hundreds of people were dying before my eyes, I think children can handle to truth of America. If they could learn about the bad choices that our ancestors made, then maybe we can stop them from continuously happening.

3) The future generations depend on this change. If we keep teaching, believing and acting the same way, there will never be any change. POC, Asian-Americans, Latinx, Indigenous people, the LBGTQ Community and all other cultures, religions, beliefs and ideas need to be nurtured, respected and taught; not skimmed over because people don’t wanna hear about it. Everyone is deserving of representation. We need to teach the newer generations that it is okay to be different and unique, to be caring and compassionate and to welcome knowledge with an open mind.
