Joint Spousal FFEL Consolidation loans cannot be re-consolidated into a federal Direct consolidation loan under current federal policy, and therefore cannot qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Even though myself and my spouse both work for a PSLF Eliglble employer we can't participate in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. I have worked for the University for over 20 years, yet can't qualify for loan forgiveness because I was convinced to participate in the Spousal Loan Consolidation Program. Working for the University means I don't get the competitive pay rates available in provate industry. I currently owe more than twice my original loan amount on my student loans.Qualifying for Public Service Loan Forgiveness would mean catching up and paying off my debts instead of falling further behind each year.
