Yesterday, after 24 days of refusing to eat and to take vital medicine, Iranian journalist and reformist activist Hengameh Shahidi stopped drinking to protest against her unexplained and unjustified detention. In a note sent from Evin prison in Tehran, she declared her innocence, said goodbye to her family and friends, and announced her consent for organ donation. Hengameh has been suffering from a heart condition; the hunger strike and refusal to take her medication put her health at risk. She says she is unable to walk anymore, and can only crawl. This is not what a journalist and a peaceful activist must go through. You can read more about her case here.
We are 24 days late but we can still try to save and release her. The way Hengameh has been treated by the ministry of intelligence and the judiciary system violates many of the rights that are recognized and publically announced by President Rouhani's administration in the Iranian Citizens' Rights Charter. By signing this petition, we ask President Rouhani to keep his word and promise, to be obliged by his own law, act according to the articles A, B, P, J, Z and Ta (Alef, Be, Pe, Jim, Ze, Tay) of the Citizens' Rights Charter and do whatever he can to protect Hengameh's rights.
