Dear President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa

I am writing on behalf of Sri Lankan ex-pats in Maldives to request to consider the evacuation of Sri Lankans in Maldives.

Please instruct the Foreign Ministry and SriLankan Airlines to assist in the evacuation of the Sri Lankans in Maldives.

As you know, there are more than 3,000 of your citizens stuck in Maldives in different resorts not been able to travel to Sri Lanka due to COVID-19, and there are more than 40 resorts been closed, many more resorts to shut down within coming weeks.

Unfortunately, once the resorts close down, we no longer have seaplanes, boat transfer. Sri Lankan ex-pats are not allowed to leave the resort without confirmed international flight ticket.

Thus, we are not able to visit Male city for any reasons now, which means supply to the resorts are very limited in food and all other requirements, in case of any medical emergencies will then be a huge problem for all of us.

We are in very tragic situation now here in Maldives. Our families and children are waiting for us at home.

Please approve urgent charter flights to get all of your citizens back to our mother land.

With the help of extraordinary president like you and with the determination and fortitude government have shown, we believe that you can give Sri Lanka citizens their best chance to lead lives of meaning and purpose.

Thank you for your serious consideration of our concerns and your commitment and collaboration on this important issue.

We look forward to your response and actions.

Sincerely,

Sri Lankans in Maldives
