Paid Parental Leave for All UF Employees

Current University of Florida policy offers six weeks of paid parental leave to some employees, time which must be repaid within the following six years from sick and vacation days. In addition, this policy does not apply to all the faculty and staff that keep UF running, excluding, among others, adjunct professors and graduate assistants.
Studies on the subject show that paid parental leave has health benefits for families and economic benefits for companies and the employees that take paid leave. When parents are given an appropriate amount of paid time off following recent childbirth or adoption, mother and child are healthier, child mortality decreases, and parents are more likely to return to work and work longer hours, allowing businesses to retain their skilled employees. Quite clearly, paid parental leave benefits all citizens.
In supporting this petition, we ask that the University of Florida administration works toward a policy of allowing six weeks of paid parental leave to ALL of its employees, and drop the caveat requiring parental leave to be repaid from sick and vacation days.
