What happened on January 6, 2021 was a crime against our democracy. Our democracy is fragile yet Mr. Trump chose to incite a group of his supporters through his words to insurrection at the Capitol.  Due to the fact that the 25th amendment is unlikely because those who could implement it do not have the spine for it nor is (another) impeachment likely because there may not be time for it, there has to be a way to make Trump accountable.

I propose that Trump not be allowed to receive all the benefits afforded to past Presidents under the The Former Presidents Act (known also as FPA; 3 U.S.C. § 102). By law, former presidents are entitled to a pension, staff and office expenses, medical care or health insurance, and Secret Service protection. For his treasonous act, he deserves jail time. In lieu of that, at the very least, he does not deserve the benefits given to Presidents as they leave office.

The last four years has been an international embarrassment for America due to Trumps words, actions, and policy enforcement. There is no justifiable reason to allow a President to remain on the rolls of government paid benefits as mentioned above after committing treason and being the main person to incite an attempted coup at the Capitol building by domestic terrorists that as of today left four people dead.

Moreover, this action will serve as a consequence and lesson for all those in the future who take The Oath*, that this kind of leadership will never be tolerated again.

*OATH as stated in Article II, Section I, Clause 8 of the U.S. Constitution: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
