The older residence halls at the University of Delaware contribute to a host of problems for students: pest infestations, cramped living areas, limited bathroom space, and most significantly, lack of air-conditioning. Living in a dorm without air-conditioning causes most students health issues and high levels of distress-especially in the warmer months like August, September, April, and May. Students experience cold sweats, fevers, allergies, heat exhaustion, and are driven to the point of sleeping on the floors of their friends' air-conditioned rooms.

Not all dorms are like this. Some dorms are spacious, have working utilities, and are air-conditioned. Underclassmen have no choice in their living situations as all freshmen are randomly assigned a dorm. The worst part is a traditional room with AC and a traditional room without are very similar in cost. A student living in an older residence hall, like Lane or Russell, will have a significantly worse living situation than a student living in a new one, like South Academy or Gilbert. Implementing air-conditioners in every dorm room will greatly improve students' living experiences on campus. Students will more effectively focus on their academics, social life, and overall better enjoy living on-campus, without the stress of residing in unlivable conditions.
