We urge Palm Beach Atlantic University to make amendments to the Navigator  (student handbook) to reflect the diverse theological convictions and denominations of the student body.

Palm Beach Atlantic University is defined as a Christian Interdenominational University. However, its current established policies on Sexuality and Gender are limited to only representing non-LGBTQ+ affirming positions and fails to represent the diverse denominations within the student body. Many students are part of denominations that are affirming of LGBTQ+ people such as the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, the Presbyterian Church, the United Church of Christ, the Reformed Church in America, and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Faculty and staff who belong to LGBTQ+ affirming churches owe their theological loyalty to those churches and not to PBA. PBA’s non-affirming position listed in their policies forces these faculty and staff to go against their own Christian conscience, to violate their allegiance to their home congregation.

These are the reasons why we believe the below statements in the Navigator are problematic and should be changed.

Excerpts from the Navigator's Statement on Human Sexuality and Gender Identity:

"Sex is explicitly intended for the marital relationship between a biological male and biological female (1 Corinthians 7:2-5)...

Palm Beach Atlantic University continues to affirm this biblical understanding as a faithful commitment in marriage between a biological male and biological female and purity in relationships outside of marriage...

Temptations relating to sexuality and gender identity include heterosexual sex outside of marriage; homosexual behavior; the perversion of sexuality through pornography (Matt. 5:27-28), rape, incest, sexual addictions; alternate gender expression and all other forms of sexuality that deviate from the biblical standard for sexuality. It is the community expectation that PBA students, faculty, and staff will neither engage in nor promote sexuality or gender expression that contradicts biblical standards (Rom. 1:21-27; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; Gen. 2:24; Eph. 5:31). It is also the community expectation that PBA students, faculty, and staff will exercise sensitivity and not mistreat those who struggle with any temptation."
