In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Concordia University St. Paul has taken appropriate action by moving all classes to online/virtual format. In doing so, the university has shown its dedication to the safety and well being of its students and all involved in university life. For this, we* are grateful.

This transition has not been easy. Each individual has been (and continues to be) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in some shape or form, and many find the new learning format an awkward and disruptive part in the mix of everyday life. Learning environments have changed drastically as families share the home environment. Those without personal computers must find ways to complete necessary coursework. Those who are not familiar with the online learning format will be tested on content before they are comfortable with the software. The list continues to grow as external circumstances change for Concordia students, but the grading criteria remain the same.

The purpose of this petition is to implement a Pass/No Pass grading option for the current spring semester of 2020 at Concordia University St. Paul.

We believe this is a fair and reasonable request given the stark, dramatic, and immediate external circumstances. As we all deal with our daily struggles, we appreciate Concordia's faculty for their constant dedication to health and education. We acknowledge the professors and administration for their flexibility during these chaotic times and wish to extend our thanks for their care, encouragement, and access to relevant resources. Faculty efforts and Concordia's robust tools ease the impact of this transition but are not a proper substitute for face-to-face classes. By their nature, virtual courses are less free-flowing, less dynamic, and most likely as jarring to the faculty as to the students. Students' grades have been negatively impacted due to these disruptions, affecting GPA. This petition aims to advocate for students, to hold up the value of fairness, and to spare academic blemishes for students and faculty which would otherwise probably not have occurred in the absence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is for these reasons that we the undersigned formally request that Concordia University St. Paul administration provide a Pass/No Pass option for students enrolled at the university for the academic term of spring 2020.

*Students of the current term (spring 2020) who are enrolled at Concordia University St. Paul may sign this petition.
