President Bradley: Don't Demolish Downtown Landmarks for Student Housing

Indiana State University is focusing on the north side of Wabash Avenue's 500 block as the site for Phase 1 of their Downtown Student Housing project. That block features four vacant buildings that are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which together contain over 100,000 square feet of built space.

These buildings are all readily-adaptable for upstairs housing and ground floor retail. They are located on the National Road, which has been designated a National Scenic Byway.

These local landmarks should not be demolished to make way for student housing, especially since there are many other sites downtown that could accommodate what ISU wants to build. We ask that no National Register-listed buildings be demolished to realize the potentially very positive steps that ISU is planning that will bring student housing to downtown Terre Haute.
