Mary Hayes started this petition to Senator Bernie Sanders and

Hart island has long been a stigma of unwanted and unknown individuals that have passed away. In the year of 2020 so many covid-19 patients that passed had families and loved ones that did not have a choice but to have there loved ones interred on Hart Island.

Some family members have decided to not disturb their loved ones remains and some have decided to have their loved ones exhumed and interred at proper cemeteries. I don't think this should be a choice that has a stigma.

I am asking to have Hart Island designated as a memorial so that loved ones can visit as if it were a proper Cemetery without disturbing their loved ones remains. The only way that this can happen is if Hart Island is open to the public and made a memorial to the people that are buried there. At this point in time in our pandemic lifetime it doesn't matter if someone is unknown or if you didn't have a choice because of overwhelmed Funeral Homes & mortuaries everyone should be able to come and pay their respects alike.

Not only would this speak to the heroic efforts of New York City during this time of pandemic that no one could have foreseen it will also allow the world to see us as humanitarians that care for our loved ones whether we know their names or their heritage but as one people paying respect to the citizens of this great City that lost their lives to something we could not have foreseen.
