The Worcester State University Dance Team, ranked 13th in the nation & Coached by Christie McPherson, is under the "club sports" umbrella of the OSILD (Office of Student Involvement & Leadership Development) department. Historically, the management and policy structure of OSILD has not only forced student team members to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket to participate (in addition to their school tuition and activity fees) but has paralyzed its capacity to grow and better represent our University & the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Team members have to pay for things like uniforms, supplies, travel, offsite practice space when the University isn't able to provide safe accommodations, choreography and camp coaching, and more while student-athletes are provided these things at no cost. Our Coach is severely underpaid to do a job of two people and was recently laid off due to COVID by the University. Now, the remaining team members are being asked by OSILD to take on the work and expense of managing the team without a Coach that has led this team from 36th in the nation to 13th in under two years. Our students are being asked to work for free in this role in addition to paying excessive costs out of pocket due to being considered a "club sport" and not an athletic team.

Most major universities have their dance and cheer teams as a part of the "Spirit Team" umbrella of the athletics department in order to better create campus involvement and spirit among the athletic events. We are asking the University to immediately transfer the Dance Team to the athletics department to alleviate the extensive financial burden on the students of the team and better allow us to represent our school and state on a national platform. We are asking that our Coach be immediately reinstated to manage and lead our team virtually as other faculty are doing and to be paid a regionally fair wage for the work she does as our leader. We are being asked for fair Title IX representation as a historically all-female team at the University.
