I am the NRA. I am a gun owner and hunter. I am also a certified shotgun coach.
I fully support the 2nd Amendment.
However,,,
I cannot, in good conscience, defend or support the sales of assault type weapons to the general public,
At no time in my life have I ever felt the need to use an assault weapon for hunting or any other purpose.
My friends do not hunt with assault weapons.
Civilians have NO legitimate need for assault weapons, whether they are trained in their use or not. We need to differentiate between 'need' and 'want'.
It is unrealistic to believe that we need assault type weapons to effectively defend ourselves in our homes OR on the street. It is a fact that there are many individuals out there just looking for a chance to "legally defend themselves". Many of these people deliberately put themselves in harm's way just to exercise their 'rights'.
This ignorance is one of our fundamental problems.
There are no valid reasons to alter the Constitution or to institute a ban on firearms in general.
We don't have an epidemic of "gun violence". We DO have an epidemic of violent thought and behavior. This is what is meant by the phrase "guns don't kill people, people kill people".
This trend has absolutely NOTHING to do with weapons. It is due to the environment that we are raising our children in.
Almost everything they see from the time they're born reflects and glorifies different types of violent behavior. We can't seem to "see the forest for the trees"!
We need to be addressing why we have an increasingly violent society and what, if anything can be done about it.
I challenge you, Mr President, the NRA and my fellow gun owners to have the courage to look this issue in the eye, see the reality and start thinking rationally rather than emotionally.
