Invite Texas State Senator Wendy Davis to the White House
On June 25th, 2013, Texas State Senator Wendy Davis staged a 13-hour filibuster to effectively kill SB 5, a bill in the Texas Legislature that would have prohibited most abortions after 20 weeks, mandated needless restrictions that would have likely cut the number of abortion clinics in the state from 42 to only 5, and required doctors who perform abortions to have admittance privileges to a nearby hospital. Additionally, there would have been greater restrictions placed on the use of RU-486.
Sen. Davis' bold 13-hour stand for Texas women took courage and a resolve that has galvanized millions of Americans in support of reproductive rights.
However, the battle to empower women with rights over their own healthcare continues, and to that end, we call on President Obama to make a symbolic gesture of solidarity by inviting Senator Davis to the White House to discuss reproductive rights and a plan to stand with women as the fight continues.
