Dear President Barack Obama,

The death penalty in the USA is the subject of considerable heated debate. America’s people are far from the only citizens concerned about the death penalty. Throughout the entire world, people of myriad nationalities express their advice and opinions about the questionable usefulness, financial cost and barbarity of capital punishment.
Those sincerely opposed to capital punishment relentlessly dedicate themselves to staving off the application of death sentences. We are not anarchists. Rather, we do not condone criminal conduct and concur that a crime should be punished according prevailing laws as well as to discourage others from carrying out similar ruthless criminal acts.

But is the capital punishment process just, humane and fair? The death penalty is an extreme punishment from which there is no return. You are no doubt aware that executions are typically carried out years after sentencing! It is hardly unusual for prisoners on death row to die of natural and other causes long before their death sentences would have been implemented.

According to the fundamental principles of the United States of America, the Amendments V, VIII and XIV are flouted.

A. Amendment V (Ratified in 1791):

“ No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

B. Amendment VIII (Ratified in 1791):

" Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. "

C. Amendment XIV, Section I (Ratified 1868):

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state in which they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall deprive any state any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law;. nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

Examples of cruel, unusual and barbaric treatment of death row inmates are numerous, to say the least. A most-recent case involved the botched execution of inmate Clayton Lockett, in H-Unit, McAlister, Oklahoma. Another case in point is that of Charles Warner. Mr. Warner was administered an incorrect drug and the killing process had to be repeated many times over! How many humans should endure a painful-but-legal martyrdom before society concedes that capital punishment is nothing more than a condoned criminal act?

Legal murder cannot and should not continue! You are the President of the United States of America and only you possess the power to intervene and initiate legal proceedings to terminate the death sentence. The governors have the power to abolish the death penalty in their respective states, but for the good of all Americans, and for the good of all humanity, stop the killing, stop state-sanctioned murder, please terminate all forms of capital punishment---NOW!
