On March 1st, 2021, Edgewood College declared that all classes will be in-person and on-campus during the Fall 2021 semester. We are thankful that our college is eager to get our students back into the classroom and back to a new normal. We also acknowledge that it is extremely challenging to uproot an entire institution and we appreciate our instructors for taking the time to adjust their curriculums entirely online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although we recognize that the college has considered input from faculty and staff by making this decision, these changes are not ideal for many of our students and this must be addressed. This announcement has caused students of Edgewood College a great deal of emotional stress.

We propose that the students of Edgewood College deserve the option of online and hybrid classes in Fall 2021. While the transition to online learning has been difficult for our faculty, staff and students, we have overcome this learning curve over the last three semesters. This resilience proves that we can continue to provide online education for another semester as the pandemic subsides further. We must think of the students’ personal lives and mental health during this difficult year and how it will affect their grades. This must be a priority of our institution.

If this model of learning is implemented during the Fall of 2021, many of our hardworking students will benefit from it. We are asking for our administrators to be understanding and to accommodate the differing academic needs of our student body. In addition, allowing our students who feel more comfortable with remote learning to continue attending online classes will optimize social distancing on our campus when students return in-person in August.

Again, we are thankful that our college has taken the steps to keep their students physically healthy throughout the last three semesters, but we also must keep ourselves mentally healthy- especially in a time like this. We hope that our college will continue to put their students first and foremost.
