Xcel Energy’s Hayden coal plant is standing in the way of Colorado’s clean energy future. While thousands of megawatts of renewable energy projects are ready to break ground, Xcel is turning its back on the demands of its customers and attempting to lock Colorado into yet another long-term commitment to coal.
Even as the cost of coal soars, Xcel is asking their Colorado energy customers to spend tens of millions of dollars upgrading the Hayden coal plant. The upgrades will do nothing to limit the amount of carbon dioxide produced by these plants and will cost more than double what the units are currently worth. These coal-fired units are a drain on Colorado’s precious resources and a bad investment for Colorado ratepayers.
Now is not the time to be making large investments in old, dirty coal plants. Xcel needs to retire the Hayden coal plant and make smart, 21st century investments in wind, solar and energy efficiency.
