Preserve Our Gem, Rib Mountain

There is a proposed plan to expand the Granite Peak Ski Area on Rib Mountain in Wausau, Wisconsin that would impact the beautiful hiking/snow shoeing trail system currently accessible via Grouse Ln (Turkey Vulture Trail, Quarry Trail, Homestead Trail). Yes, we love skiing just as much as the next person, and understand that many folks think expanding the ski area and opening parts of it to summer activities (like a zip line course) is thought to bring extra tourism dollars to the Wausau area. Rib Mountain is 1.5 billion years old. Disturbing the extensive natural habitat in the area around the old quarry - home to turkey vultures and several ancient and rare, plant, bird, and animal species would be a devastating loss for the Central Wisconsin area. It would also make Rib Mountain less accessible to our community members who cannot afford a lift ticket for their family or ziplining in the summer. The trails are free and accessible to all. Please, let us preserve this phenomenal natural resource, our gem, Rib Mountain.
