Great News! UW turned campuses into remote and online alternatives amid the coronavirus pandemic, however many other campuses among the state must also take proactive attempts against defeating the novel coronavirus. COVID-19, which started in Wuhan, China, and has now spread to an more than 100,000 cases around the globe. Deaths are currently over 3,300. With asymptomatic tendencies, COVID-19 has an alarming contagious infection rate. This creates a dangerously unsafe environment for students and faculties with underlying health conditions.

Many infected individuals may spread the virus without their knowledge, and many students may be infected and may be spreading this virus on campus in private and public. There are already 12 deaths and over 200 cases in the US. Some coming from King County, to Grant County (Eastern Washington). State Governor Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency Saturday (02/29). Washington state has 70 confirmed COVID-19 cases so far (possibly more by now).

We are asking Wolf Yeigh, Chancellor of UWB, Tim Wilson, Dean of student affairs at UWB, Ana Mari Cauce, President of Seattle UW, and Mark Pagano, Chancellor of UWT, to begin preventative measures against COVID-19. The transmission of this novel virus will inevitably infect students, and faculties.

In consideration, we the students, urge all of UW to make responsible decisions and prepare campuses and facilities to best prevent infection, and continue to keep students, faculties, their families, and friends, all safe, even if that means closing campuses temporarily. We should encourage everyone in our community to be proactive and mindful, and to support all the other campuses in the area, we are all in this together.
