The decision by the Valuer General to decrease the value of land on Kangaroo Island by an average of 15% will have serious consequences in rebuilding the island after disastrous fires and Covid-19.  In an ideal world it would be nice to see a reduction in Council Rates through future efficiencies and savings but this decision by the Valuer General is untimely and unwarranted and it will have reverberating affects, not just on Council Services through a possible drop in revenues, but also in householders ability to leverage their properties for future financial requirements.  Unlike other State Governments the SA Government will not compensate Kangaroo Island for any reduction in values caused by the fires but the decision to devalue is also inconsistent with the number of properties damaged on the island and does not value our intentions for post-fire productivity in the rural and general business island economies. Please join me in letting Premier Steven Marshall know that the decision of his Valuer General is not acceptable. We need to send a strong message to our government that we are a highly resilient community and we intend to regain the ground we have lost as a high value producer for South Australia.
