In BC the East Indian and Sikh population has been living as respected Canadians since late 1800's. We have fought in both world wars for the then British crown and Canada representing the British Indian army.
But when it comes to celebrating our one biggest festival, "Vaisakhi" We have to celebrate it on a weekend, because it's not a recognized provincial holiday.
Imagine celebrating good Friday on a Saturday and Easter Monday on a Sunday. We are no 5th on the biggest ethnic groups in Canada. Most of the other 9 groups are predominantly Christian faith for e.g. Scottish, Irish, English, Italian, French, Ukrainian, polish etc etc.
I'm sure most people on the mainland know about the Vaisakhi parade, that happens in every April where over 300k people of East Indian origin come to take part. Many other religions and races also attend the parade and are encouraged to take part in it.
East Indian/sikh religion makes upto almost 5% of the total population of our beautiful country.
Help us get the word out.
