NSW Nursing homes MUST employ registered nurses 24/7

Some months ago my mother died while in nursing home care. We were unlucky. On the night she fell seriously ill, so did six other residents. Athough the Registered Nurse on duty was well supported by wonderful aids and assistants, my mother did not have a chance. Staff were overwhelmed.

Now Health Minister Jillian Skinner has decided to let nursing homes get rid of the Registered nurses (Sydney Morning Herald 1/5/2016), leaving such crises to be managed by aids, domestics and junior staff. The Health Minister says staffing regulations are a Federal responsibility. Perhaps she is right about that. However that does not explain why the NSW government would want to put elderly and ill people at risk now, when there is no adequate Federal regulation to protect them.

And, as the Minister for Health in NSW, it is Mrs Skinner's job to ensure correct health practices are followed in NSW.

We do not know Mrs Skinner's real motivations for this move. It does not save the NSW government money since nursing homes tend to be owned by companies and private concerns. We can only speculate why the Health Minister would want to imperil the lives of our ill and elderly by trading in their safety to make bigger profits for nursing home operators.

We do not need to know the truth behind Mrs Skinner's decision.  We need only to tell the NSW Premier, in a resounding voice, that we are not copping the Health Minister's betrayal of her office. Nor will we accept any changes to nursing home staffing, unless they are IMPROVEMENTS to the ratio of Registered Nurses to residents. We need to remind the NSW Premier that his government has only one duty and it is to improve the lives of the State's citizens.

Please sign this petition and help to send those clear loud messages to Premier Baird.
