Maggie Hayes started this petition to Premier League Footballers

The country is facing a national emergency. The world is facing a crisis it hasn’t seen since the end of World War 2. We live in strange and scary times. It is times like this we really must all come together.

The nation and every country around the world is in the midst of a healthcare crisis as a result of the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19. Nurses, doctors, healthcare professionals, social workers, teachers, cleaners, shop assistants - they are doing whatever they can to save lives, our NHS and protect one another.

We think the wealthiest football players, like those in the Premier League, should do their bit too. They have the financial capacity and the platforms to make a real contribution. Both to the communities our clubs reside in as well as to ensure we all have clubs to return to.

Non-playing staff shouldn’t be asked to take cuts to their wages whilst players’ wages continued to be paid - in full.

Premier league teams including Newcastle United, Norwich City, Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur have decided to furlough their non-playing staff. At Tottenham, for example, 550 non - playing staff will take a 20% pay cut and the furlough programme of government assistance will be used where applicable.

This is galling and sends a striking message to football fans and their families that maybe we aren’t all in this together. It shouldn’t be allowed in the richest league in the world.

Giving to local charities and encouraging people to stay at home is really welcomed but we think players need to do more.

We are asking players to take responsibility to give a share of their wages to ensure that the non-playing staff at football clubs have their wages protected and have jobs to return to.

The furlough scheme set up the government shouldn't be being used in situations where there is a plentiful amount of money that could be redistributed.

Those earning the most should take some of the burden, first.

Clubs like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Leeds United FC demonstrate this can be done.

No matter what team we support, we're a football family. It's about time those not as worried about finances, those living very comfortably, gave back. And, then, when we’re back in the stands, we can have something far greater than the scoreline to be proud about.
