Robert Owen started this petition to Premier John Horgan

Organ Transplants save lives and save our medical system hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in the care of patients with failing organs. We can shorten this wait list significantly by petitioning the Government of British Columbia to enact Opt-Out Presumed Consent Organ Donation Legislation.

The nations with the shortest wait times to receive deceased donor organ donations are those who have instituted Opt-Out Presumed Consent Legislation. Nations who use a form of Presumed Consent for Organ Donation at a National or Regional level include Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Chile, Columbia, France, Spain, and Wales. Opt-Out Presumed Consent Legislation assumes that all citizens have consented to donate their organs upon their death unless they register to Opt- Out.

The issue with our current system, is that most people who have organs that could save lives are too young, too health, too busy and too engaged in living to act to register as an organ donor and are uncomfortable even thinking about death. We therefore have a small number of our total population registered as organ donors.

Even if this Legislation is adopted, individuals can chose to opt out for any reason. As is the norm with our current organ donation system, family member can override organ donation after death (current system or the requested change) if it is their wish, and organ donation has no bearing on the type and quality of care received by the individual prior to death.

Consenting to donate an organ (our current system or the proposed change) does not mean that your organs will be donated upon your death. Only a very limited number of people die each year in a manner which results in organs that are viable for transplant. Of these, only a very small number of people will have organs that are suitable and could save lives.

Choosing to support this petition to enact Opt-Out Presumed Consent Organ Donation legislation will save lives, reduce the high medical system costs incurred keeping those on the transplant waiting lists alive during long costly wait times, and free up these funds to be used elsewhere in our medical system.
