Rodeo is an Unacceptable Choice for a Provincial Sport!
Why this petition matters
The United Conservative Party (UCP) of Alberta has launched a Bill (Bill 212) that would make rodeo Alberta's provincial sport.
Rodeo is not representative of Alberta, of our current culture or our diverse population. Rodeo is predominately a white, male activity based on dominating animals and supporting settler values. Women, people of colour and of many ethnic origins, differently abled people and children are largely left out of this proposed activity except as onlookers. Rodeo kills and injures many animals every year and in that way is not representative of our evolving social values. Albertans enjoy many, many other sports that allow a much broader level of participation.
The provincial government is again ignoring the views of many Albertans and also of the majority of Canadians according to polling done in September of 2020 which found that at least 62% of Canadians and 47% of Albertans are against the use of animals in rodeos. Even in Alberta, only 14% say they are strongly in favour of animal use in rodeos.
Since they have come to power, many of the decisions made by the UPC Party have been eroding their support, even amongst their loyal voters. The UCP is trying to extend an olive branch to their right wing, conservative base who, in many other issues, are not keeping up with changing times and changing public opinion.
Tell the UCP that rodeo is a poor choice for a sport to represent Alberta.
