Help Save North Sydney's historic trees from Destruction

This petition had 1,548 supporters

55 trees within the North Sydney Local Government Area are slated for destruction, or will be at risk of destruction due to substantial pruning proposed, by the NSW State Government.

One of the trees earmarked for permanent removal is a spectacular fig tree of high heritage significance within St Leonard's Park. Records indicate that this tree is from the first generation of planting in St Leonard's Park dating back to 1867.

The trees are being destroyed to make way for the proposed B-Line bus transit system.

The Transport Minister has acknowledged that the B-Line bus proposal is a short-to-medium term measure to address congestion on the northern beaches, however the loss of these beautiful trees will be permanent.

The destruction of these tress has an estimated value of over $1.4million and the minimum likely replacement period for any new tree to reach a similar size is over 20 years.

As passionate North Sydney citizens who are also current independent North Sydney Councillors, we ask you to sign our petition calling on the State Government to immediately:

* stop the destruction of our trees
* halt and review the B-Line proposal
* fully investigate all alternative transport infrastructure options to address traffic congestion from the northern beaches which does not involve the destroying our North Sydney urban forest.
