Patrick Brown started this petition to Premier Ford and

As proud members of the communities of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott, Russell, and Cornwall, we're deeply concerned with the inclusion of our region in the current Ontario-wide shutdown.

When the lockdown was announced on December 21, COVID data for the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) showed 8 hospitalizations and 2 cases in intensive care. This petition is being launched on January 6, when the EOHU dashboard now shows a total of 6 hospitalizations and zero ICU cases.

For a population of 200,000 people living in an area 5,000 square kilometres in size, these figures don't paint a picture of a local health system at risk of being overwhelmed.

In its COVID response policy framework, the provincial government committed to making decisions that were based on best-available scientific knowledge and public health data. The framework also pledged to adopt measures that were targeted and informed by regional circumstances.

When it comes to how our corner of Ontario has been treated, the lockdown fails the government's own test on both counts. Families, workers, and the community at large are paying the price as a result - with many small businesses teetering on the brink of closure, social dislocation and isolation affecting a growing number of residents, important services remaining inaccessible, and the associated mental health impacts magnifying in intensity.

Make no mistake – our hearts go out to our fellow Ontarians in places where infection rates are high and hospitals are scrambling to keep up. But at the same time, it beggars belief that the unique public health circumstances of dense urban centers like Toronto should lead to a state of lockdown for a large, sparsely populated rural area like Eastern Ontario.

To our provincial government representatives, we ask the following:

1. End the shutdown for Eastern Ontario immediately, as warranted by current public health indicators; and

2. Refrain from imposing subsequent lockdowns in Eastern Ontario that are not supported by best-available data and are not informed by local circumstances.

To our municipal and regional officials, we seek your strong support in likewise advocating for these outcomes as part of your ongoing engagement with your provincial counterparts.

Thank you.
