Prevention is better than cure - Stop the budget cuts to community health
Prevention is the best cure for sickness, and prevention is exactly what Community and Women's Health Care does.
Community and Women's Health Centres provide crucial preventative health services that keep people off hospital waiting lists and living productive lives in the community. They run programs aimed at addressing the root causes of health problems like diabetes, heart disease, childhood obesity, family violence and depression.
Under Ted Baillieu, the Government has cut almost $32 million from community health care funding, with the main cut being phased in over two years. The first year of cuts hit hard. If the second year of planned cuts go ahead, many community and women’s health programs will be rolled back.
With Denis Napthine now Premier, we are calling on the Government to end the cuts to community health care and boost funding for these vital services. Please sign the petition below.
If the cuts proceed, community and women’s health centres will be forced to cut back programs in areas of chronic disease prevention, health education, sexual and reproductive health, prevention of violence against women, food security, and race-based discrimination.
Instead of reducing costs to government, the funding cuts will place an additional burden on other parts of the health care system. Without preventative health care, people get sick and end up on hospital waiting lists. The cost of treating sick people is far greater than the cost of prevention.
