Last week a prescribed burn spiralled out of control and devastated the Margaret River community, completely destroying 41 homes. Bushfires are always a danger -- but this one could have been avoided if it was managed better.
Experts have been warning for months that this summer is set to be one of the worst bushfire seasons in recent memory. Meteorologists are predicting record temperatures -- and the last week only highlights the dangers of poor management and unpreparedness.
The state government has been aware of glaring problems with fire management since the Keelty review into the Perth Hills bushfires in Feburary. The report made 55 urgent recommendations to fix problems with practices, equipment and cooperation between various agencies -- but months later, only one third have been implemented. This leaves communities at huge risk this summer from the kind of incompetence that led to the Margaret River fires.
Please sign the petition to Colin Barnett calling on him to urgently implement the remaining recommendations from the Keelty review. Last week we lost our house, our businesses and a lifetime of memories -- let’s make sure no one else has to go through that.
