Protect the Channel Country's rivers and floodplains from fracking for shale gas

I fear for the future of our rivers and also my family's and other livelihoods on the land here in Queensland’s Channel Country. The former LNP government of Campbell Newman sold us down the river by ripping up essential protections against destructive mining.

My name is Angus Emmott and I am a third generation grazier at “Noonbah”, south of Longreach. The future of the Channel Country is now at risk and I am asking for your help.

For one hundred years, families like mine have worked with the natural flows of the Channel Country rivers to produce some of Queensland's healthiest and cleanest beef. The rivers flow free because we work with nature, not against it.

Our community of pastoralists, traditional owners and tourism operators supported the state’s Wild Rivers laws because they meant our rivers would flow freely and keep the floodplains healthy. But Campbell Newman's government trashed those protections without any consultation with locals.

The Newman LNP government was deaf to our calls, but not to the oil and gas company Santos, which lobbied for the wind-back of the state’s Wild Rivers laws. Now, the Channel Country’s fertile floodplains could be fracked for shale gas.

I fear that if our rivers and floodplains are fracked, they will be poisoned and damaged forever. The land that we love, our tourism businesses and our reputation for clean, green food production will be destroyed.

Please tell Queensland's new Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk that fracking isn't welcome in our iconic Channel Country. Tell her to protect our healthy rivers from Santos' plans to frack the heart of Australia.

Thank you.

Angus Emmott
