To,                                                                                                                             Mr. Pranab Mukherjee,                                                                               The President of the Republic of India

Dear Sir,

We, the concerned citizens of India, would like to draw your kind attention to the recent mob lynchings and public killings of Muslims and Dalits by the so called "Gau Rakshak Dal" across India in the name of cow vigilantism, and would appeal you to ban all such groups and delegitimize their activities before Your Highness' tenure expires, so that the image of India as a peace-loving, secular and progressive democracy is upheld again.

Your Excellency,

Being the supreme guardian of the nation of one and a quarter billion people for the last five years, you have discharged all your responsibilities with utmost sincerity and uncompromising integrity. India will always remain grateful to you for many of your pro-activeness and bold initiatives, Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2013 is just one of them. You have never shied away from reminding the nation's conscience whenever it has faltered, the most recent of which is when you said, "We have to ponder over, pause and reflect when we read in the newspaper or see in the television screen that an individual is being lynched because of some alleged violation or law or not. When mob frenzy becomes so high and irrational, uncontrollable we are to pause and reflect: are we vigilant enough? I am not talking of vigilantism - I'm talking of are we vigilant enough proactively to save the basic tenets of our country." This highlights your iron-willed commitment towards the values on which India is footed.

However, we are getting ourselves ready to digest the sad truth that you will not be our President any more after July 22, 2017. This reality has pushed us to make this distress call to urge you to exercise your authority to stop the horrible trend of mob lynching in the name of protecting cows, which, according to Hindustan Times, has taken 28 lives and 124 people were injured in last seven years. Innocents like Mohammed Akhlaq, Mazloom Ansari, Imteyaz  Khan, Zaid Ahmed Bhat, Pehlu Khan, Alimuddin Ansari and Junaid Khan are just few of those who are mercilessly killed by the so called "Gau Rakshaks" just on suspicion that they carry, trade, eat or preserve beef. This is an extremely distressing trend, which, if not dealt with decisively, will surely ruin the pluralistic social fabric of our beloved country.

Therefore, we urge Your Honour to make the best use of the remaining few days of your tenure by declaring "cow vigilantism" illegal and assuring that all those involved in such inhuman activism be brought to book. No other action will endear you more to our coming generations than assuring that nobody takes law in his or her hands and that everybody has the right to live respectfully.

Yours faithfully,

Citizens of India
