In the 21st century, the superhighway called the Internet connects the youth to the land of opportunities. While it is absolutely critical that the young generation knows how to make the best use of this superhighway, it is even more critical that they know how to protect themselves from the serious threats & dangers which exist on this highway.
UNICEF in its report "Child Online Protection in India" tells us that the children of India who use the Internet, are at a very high risk of falling prey to Cyberbullying, Internet Addiction, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Exploitation, Cyber Extremism, Online Commercial Fraud, Habit Formation and Online Enticement to Illegal behaviour. The most disturbing part of the report says "In fact, there is a widespread lack of awareness among parents, teachers, the police and policymakers of the growing and ever-changing risks of child online abuse and exploitation."
After studying the critical recommendations from UNICEF and that from leading industry sources, I demand that the Ministry of HRD make Digital Citizenship and Internet Maturity a compulsory part of School Education in India.
