THE PROBLEMS

The educated youth is beset with a host of mental health problems. Additionally a lack of knowledge in human interaction and relationships formed therein are endangering the basic fabric of society. Failing parent-children relationships, failing spousal relationships, breakdown of marriages are becoming increasingly common today. This is especially being disturbingly observed in the urban middle class youth.

THE SOLUTION

Mental health and human value should be the part of curriculum in all forms of higher education (especially undergraduate level). The solution has been outlined in two subsections:

SOLUTION TO MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

Mental health  has not been heeded to. In terms of psychology, the following types of disorders are becoming more prevalent:

  1. Anxiety related Disorders
  2. Bipolar and Related Disorders
  3. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  4. Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders: Acute stress disorder, adjustment disorders, reactive attachment disorders
  5. Sleep Wake Disorders : Insomnia, Hypersomnolence, Restless Leg Syndrome
  6. Disruptive, Impulse-Control, and Conduct Disorders: Intermittent explosive disorder, Conduct disorder, Oppositional defiant disorder
  7. Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders: Alcoholism, Tobacco use, Cannabis-use

An awareness of these mental health issues, along with steps to be taken to identify and manage them is of great importance. Of primary importance is stress management. Stress causes memory loss, increased risk to cardiac issues and a host of other problems.

SOLUTION TO DIMINISHING HUMAN VALUES IN HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS

Relationships can be broadly classified into person-person relationship and person-society relationship. An awareness of these is going to lead to a healthier, more peaceful and happier society. The awareness can be built with the following

  1. Human Relationship study: Definition of following relationships: a) Parental relationship b) Sibling relationships c) Spousal relationships d) Friendship. The study of relationships include the origin, expectations, and limits of each of the relationship. A particular emphasis needs to be laid on spousal relationships, and a clear definition of marriage of any kind. The following aspects need to be covered : The reasons of existence of the institution, Emotional aspect (emotional intimacy, emotional availability, emotional fidelity), Physical aspect (physical intimacy, sexual fidelity), financial aspect (inheritance, rights to property etc.)
  2. Human Relationship boundaries: Boundaries of appropriateness in relationships of any kind ( parental /sibling/ spousal/ friendships)
  3. Social Relationship study: Relationships with people of different kinds existing in various places (neighborhood, workplace). A very heavy emphasis has to be laid on the difference between culture and religion. An equally heavy emphasis  has to be laid on the importance of tolerance. Civic and social responsibilities should be clearly defined.

The solution discussed above only contains the ingredients  of the training to be imparted and has refrained from the pedagogy of the same. However the solution requires that the training be compulsory.

About the petitioner

The petitioner is person who is young professional and was disturbed previously with a host of societal problems. He has been reading on such issues fervently and feels that the solution to the problem can only come from educating the society in a way different from how it is being done today. In his opinion education should be more of life training, which includes professional skill training for livelihood as not totally geared towards skill training.
