My school, McDaniel, and two others, Cleveland and Roosevelt, have closed their campuses due to the surge of COVID-19 cases. Meaning we will start distance learning on at least Friday, January 14. If we ever go back to in-person learning, we will need to go better and safer, so we don’t do distance learning again. COVID-19 has made our mental health worse in the past and may do it again this year, but has also annoyed us by staying home. For some students, school is the only place where they can get away from everything or from a situation at home, which is why it’s very important we return to in-person learning safely. This is why I made this petition demanding increased testing, KN95 or N95 masks for everyone in our school district, and extra days to get the COVID vaccine. At McDaniel, we have a student health center that only gives the vaccine for two days (Monday and Friday) where I believe it should be more than two days to give more students and the community the vaccine.
