Ashley Boren started this petition to POWAY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Poway Unified School District needs to require an Ethnic Studies curriculum to be taught in its six high schools across San Diego.

Most students do not get the opportunity to learn about the histories of Black, Asian, Chicanx/Latinx, Native American, or other non-white groups until they start college. For students who do not pursue higher education, they might never have the chance to learn about people of color in school.

This is why I am calling for the Poway Unified School District to introduce a curriculum that includes classes for students to take during all four years of high school. Students will learn about historical figures, media representations, culture, and more. Academics in the field of Ethnic Studies will act as consultants to the district as they design the curriculum.

By learning Ethnic Studies in high school, graduates will be better prepared to understand racial issues in the United States. Students will also have a better idea of what different types of majors are available if they choose to go to college.

As a person of mixed heritage, I want to use my voice to advocate for schools to teach beyond the male-dominated, Eurocentric perspective. Please sign this position to support our cause to bring Ethnic Studies to Poway Unified School District.
