Why this petition matters
Poverty rarely has a single cause. A range of factors including rising living costs, low pay, lack of work, and inadequate social security benefits together mean some people do not have enough resources. Poverty refers to lacking enough resources to provide the necessities of life food, clean water, shelter and clothing. But in today's world, that can be extended to include access to health care, education and even transportation. Poverty entails more than the lack of income and productive resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision-making.
