Yesenia Giron started this petition to Waubonsee Community College Board of Trustees

Due to COVID-19, Waubonsee Community College decided to cancel the ceremony for graduation in May of 2020. I understand that it is the only graduation for an associate's degree and maybe it doesn't mean a lot to all of you but to some of us it does. It is no different from receiving a high school diploma or any other kind of degree like a Bachelor's. We all deserve to walk the stage for our loved ones and to make them proud. We wanted to feel the experience one last time by walking on the stage before heading off to our next school to keep studying harder and feeling that accomplishment we worked hard to get there.

From classes to events getting canceled, commencement was the last event we hoped wouldn't get taken away from us. Canceling the Commencement is devastating for not only the senior class but for the first-generation students and their families. First-generation students spent so much time and money to achieve that accomplishment of being the first one in their home to graduate college. They now won't be able to be that first person to walk across their college stage to get their degree.

This petition is for the graduation ceremony to be postponed and NOT canceled. A lot of schools like Aurora University have postponed their commencement till further dates to make their students proud and to their families as well. They will be splitting several ceremonies to have their students walk across the stage. Universities are much bigger and have more students graduating than at a community college usually has. If they can find ways to make their student happy then all schools like Waubonsee should do the same. Every signature and effort to change their mind would help greatly.
