Make sure the Conservative-run Council does not CUT much-needed grants and support for Aspex Gallery, Guildhall, New Theatre Royal, Kings Theatre and other cultural and creative groups supporting jobs, economic growth and well-being citywide.

As part of a Council budget consultation Conservatives running Portsmouth are considering cutting grants to citywide cultural organisations - especially mentioning theatres. To be fair they are also asking if people want the grants to go up, but at the same time they say they won't put up Council Tax next year, which means they would have to take cash away from another service to increase any cultural grant. Much more worryingly they are also inviting people to "cut the subsidy altogether".

This petition has been created to fight to keep the grants and make sure the Conservatives do not cut them in the upcoming November City Council budget debate.

We the undersigned petition Portsmouth City Council to continue to show support for the Kings Theatre, New Theatre Royal, Guildhall, Aspex Gallery and other important cultural organisations by keeping the public subsidy grant at current modest levels.  It is important the City Council does this to demonstrate to many other national funders and public bodies, like Arts Council England, plus volunteers and many cultural charities and donors, that Portsmouth City is playing its part in a cultural regeneration of our area. The City Council's commitment by way of grants and support are vital to secure many more £millions of vital funding on top to help sustain and create more Portsmouth jobs, economic growth and civic well-being across the cultural, creative and tourism industries.
