Permanently Memorializing the Trimet Victims

Ricky Best of Happy Valley and Talisein Myrddin Namkai Meche of SE Portland were killed on May 26th at Trimet's Hollywood Transit Center when they stood up for two Muslim women who were being harassed by a racist. Micah Fletcher of SE Portland, who also intervened, was injured.
I am a senior in high school and very close friends with Ricky Best's son and the rest of his family. I've grown incredibly close to everyone and was there when the police arrived and told the family the news. With so much of the devastation, anger, and fear I've seen and felt in the hearts of not only myself and the Best family, but the whole of Portland, I believe we should permanently honor and memorialize Ricky Best, Talisein Myrddin Namkai Meche, and Micah Fletcher. This can be done, perhaps among other ways, by:
- Renaming the Hollywood Transit Center to reflect the heroes
- Establishing a permanent memorial at the Hollywood Transit Center
I don't want to make this political (the family expressed disappointment in the political turn last night's vigil seemed to take), but this act of terror was rooted in the senseless violence, racism, and ignorance that as of late Portland seems to call normal. A permanent memorial will not only act as a peaceful stance against this terror and fear-mongering, but hopefully bring some semblance of peace and closure to the families.
I ask that we come together as a community to make this happen. Members of the community have been emailing the Portland Bureau of Transporation and Trimet to initiate this project. I believe a petition can help give it some footing.
