Being able to take time off work to recover from being sick is extremely important -- especially during times of massive flu outbreaks like we have right now. If people are sick they should be resting and recovering -- not spreading illness to coworkers or customers and potentially making themselves sicker. Paid sick days should be a basic right of all employees, and now Portland has the opportunity to keep our community healthy.
My husband and I both work full time, and paid sick days have made a major difference for our family. When my son is sick, one of us needs to stay home with him to help him get better. It shocks me that many families can't take days off and are forced to send their children to daycare and school before they are ready, and that workers have to weigh their health -- and the health of those around them -- against requesting a day off they might not be able to afford.
Commissioner Amanda Fritz just introduced an important proposal that would mean all workers in Portland are able to stay home when they are sick, and the Portland City Council will vote on the proposal soon. Our city commissioners need to hear from Portlanders who want to keep our community healthy.
Earned sick time is extremely important -- especially during times of massive outbreaks like we have right now. If people are sick they could be resting and recovering -- not spreading illness to coworkers or customers and potentially making themselves sicker.
Not only is this an important policy for workers and consumers, this is also important for families. Children who are sick should be able to rest at home, but without the ability for family members to take paid time off work, sick kids can be sent to school or daycare. Not only is it awful to have to be in daycare or school when you're sick, it's dangerous for the other kids there, too.
Earned Sick Days just make sense. They reduce the costly spread of illness among coworkers, reduce turnover, and keep customers healthy. Seattle and San Francisco have already passed similar resolutions and other cities around the country are considering supporting Earned Sick Days, too.
Please, support Earned Sick Days and help keep Portland healthy.
