Why this petition matters

Started by Montavilla for Safe Streets

SE Stark Street between 75th and 82nd Avenues, the town center of the Montavilla community, provides a mix of commercial and retail services to residents and visitors. It is a place where people can socialize, run their errands, window shop, and dine at local restaurants.

Since the start of COVID-19 lockdowns, the Montavilla neighborhood has struggled but has proven resilient with many small business surviving by expanding into the street to allow for social distancing.

Unfortunately, SE Stark Street is part of the High Crash Network for people driving, walking and biking. It feels unsafe to walk with your family or pet.

High traffic on SE Stark street through downtown Montavilla is a hindrance to revitalizing the community and growing small businesses. Currently, the two lanes create a ‘race-track’ feel that encourages speeding. The vehicle crash rate in the area is too high and there have been no improvements. Removing a lane of traffic will allow for expansion for street seating, car parking and a safer bike lane.

The N William / Vancouver couple received similar treatment and has turning into a thriving local community. Reducing a lane of traffic did not change the total load of the road and made travel for everyone safer. Let's be an example for the East side of the Multnomah county, by reducing crashes and making travel safer while supporting a diverse, inclusive and vibrant community for everyone.

Sign the petition for traffic calming measures and greenway in downtown Montavilla
