John Clarkson started this petition to Port Taranaki and

A Petition to Port Taranaki to reject any logs arriving by truck. All logs coming into the port for export should arrive by train.

Port Taranaki is serviced by train lines from both North and South Taranaki. These are currently well under-utilised.

Instead our roads are left in a mess and congested. They were never designed for the heavy haulage that now moves along them. NZTA and their contractors continue to show their own incompetence at keeping up with repairs and capacity/safety planning. Logging trucks make up a large amount of the traffic with little or no benefit to the people in the region. This method of transport is corporate greed to the detriment of the community.

Forestry companies should be made to take logs to the nearest siding (creating one if necessary as part of their consent to operate), with the logs then transported by train to the port. This would reduce being stuck behind numerous trucks on State Highway 3 and allow our road surface to last longer.
