I would like the polk county school board to change their nondiscrimination statement to read gender instead of sex, and include sexual orientation/ percieved sexual orientation to the list of prohibited catagories of discimination.
Many student sign their code of condect slips for a grade without even reading the rules and policies listed. They sign compliance with a contract that has refused to recognize the human rights of the youth LGBT community to attend school in a safe and respectful environment condusive to their learning. Polk County Florida also has a problem with religion being used to defend prejudice. I'm not asking for elementary kids to be educated about LGBT relationships, unisex bathrooms for transgender students, or even dress code/ uniform allowances for transgender students to wear the uniform of thier self identified gender. All i'm asking is that bullying and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity be treated with the same seriousness as discrimination on the basis of biological sex, economic status, or other protected demographics.
