Megan Goldsmith started this petition to Politicians and

The Sexual Offences Act was last updated in 2003, meaning that sexual offences are very difficult to prosecute. I believe that the world has changed so much in 17 years and that this law must be updated. Rape and sexual assault are very difficult crimes to prosecute, however I believe that the laws are so outdated that it makes it almost impossible to get justice.

Rape and sexual assault have a massive impact on the victim. And I believe that justice can really help with the healing process. From experience, I can tell you that my encounter of this horrible situation has changed my life. My mental health state was the lowest it has ever been. I felt worthless and that my life was over. I believe that mental health is not taken into account through these laws.

During the police process I was advised not to seek any help for my problems cause through this traumatic incident, as it could be used against me in court. This is disgusting. From experience, I believe that the victim suffers more than the suspect. Why is this right? When the victim should be the one that’s getting helped? I’ve realised why people do not take these kind of crimes to the police, the fear of not being believed, the fear of having to relive the trauma by speaking about it. It being a waste of time because nothing will be done. These were all of my fears, and every single one of them were apart of my process.

Please Please sign this petition, help to make a change. You never believe anything like this would happen to you but trust me, it can happen to anyone. Sign it for your friends, your family, your neighbours as trust me someone you know would have suffered from one of these traumas.
